Grendel-
Grendel is one of the three antagonists in the epic poem Beowulf. He can be depicited as a monster, demon, and a fiend. Grendel gets “stirred” at the fact Hrothgar’s men living happily (Raffel, 40). This hatred causes him to attack King Hrothgar’s mead hall, Herot for 12 years, slaughtering men. He was born of cain (Raffel, 42). Due to this he kills the King’s men for just pure hatred, no money or settlement could change him (Raffel, 43). Many fear Grendel because “points” (or swords) could not kill him (Raffle,50) . Only someone who has the strength of Beowulf would Grendel begin to fear, which he did (Raffel, 49). Beowulf uses his ability to rip Grendel’s arm off in a wrestling match, where Grendel runs back to his lair and dies there. Beowulf receives his fame and hero status as a warrior after killing Grendel (Raffel, 51). |

Grendel's Mother-
Grendel's Mother is another antagonist in the epic poem. She is the mother of Grendel, although not as strong as her son but the motive of revenge of her son's death made her stronger. She kills Hrothgar's closest friend which sparks Beowulf to kill her. Hrothgar explains that she is stronger than most men and swords also do not affect on her unless they are magical. He also talks about where she lives, which is a place where most fear. Due to Beowulf coming to her she has a advantage because he's coming into her territory. If it wasn't for the magical weapon that was hanging on the wall, she would of killed Beowulf but instead she dies (Sparknotes.com).
